Jennie Chin Hansen, CEO, American Geriatrics Society

Jennie Chin Hansen is CEO of the American Geriatrics Society (AGS) and immediate past President of AARP. The AGS is the nation's leading membership organization of geriatrics healthcare professionals, whose shared mission is to improve the health, independence and quality of life of older people.

In 2005, Hansen transitioned after nearly 25 years with On Lok, Inc., a nonprofit family of organizations providing primary, acute and long-term care community-based services in San Francisco. In May 2010, she completed her two-year term as President of AARP, in addition to the other six years she was on AARP’s national board of directors.

She has just completed a six-year term as a federal commissioner of the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC). In 2010 she served as an IOM member on the RWJ Initiative on the Future of Nursing.

Jennie has received multiple awards over the years including the 2003 Gerontological Society of America Maxwell Pollack Award for Productive Living, a 2005 Administrator’s Achievement Award from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and an honorary doctorate from Boston College in 2008. Her recent awards include the Leadership Award of Excellence, New England Healthcare Institute in October 2010 and the 2011 Picker Award for Excellence in the Advancement of Patient Centered Care in Long Term Care.

Alice Bonner, PhD, RN, FAANP, Director, Division of Nursing Homes in the Center for Medicaid, CHIP and Survey and Certification within the CMS

Alice Bonner has been a geriatric nurse practitioner for the past 20 years. She is currently the Director for the Division of Nursing Homes in the Center for Medicaid, CHIP and Survey and Certification within the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)

From 2009-2011, Alice was the Director of the Bureau of Health Care Safety and Quality at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health in Boston, MA. From 2005-2009, she was Executive Director at the Massachusetts Senior Care Foundation. She is also an Assistant Professor at the Graduate School of Nursing, University of Massachusetts in Worcester, MA. From 1997-2005, she was the Clinical Director of Long Term Care and Geriatrics at the Fallon Clinic in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Alice’s research interests include improving nursing home quality, patient safety culture in health care organizations, safe medication prescribing and management, falls prevention and improving care transitions across settings.

Marquis (Mark) Foreman, PhD, BSN, MSN, Professor & Chair, Dept. of Adult Health and Gerontological Nursing, Rush University College of Nursing

Dr. Foreman has been active in clinical geriatric research for almost 25 years. Currently, Mark is Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Nursing, Dept. of Biobehavioral Health Science, and Professor, Graduate College, Rush University. From 2008-present, he has been Professor and Chair, Dept. of Adult Health and Gerontological Nursing, Rush University College of Nursing. From 2005-2008, Mark was Associate Dean for Nursing Science Studies, and from 2003-2008, Professor, Dept. of Medical-Surgical Nursing, both at UIC College of Nursing.

Mark has been an active contributor to a number of multidisciplinary initiatives to improve the care for hospitalized elders including HOPE (Hospital Outcomes Project for the Elderly, funded by the John A. Hartford Foundation and NICHE I and II, Nurses Improving the Care for Hospitalized Elders). His current research, funded by the National Science Foundation, is a multi-site, interdisciplinary study to develop a multi-modal communication interface between an older person and an assistive robot.

Mark has received a number of awards over the years, including 2009 Fellow in the Institute of Medicine of Chicago, 1996 Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing and in 1995 was awarded the Mosby-Cameo Nursing Research Award, presented by Sigma Theta Tau International.

Kathleen Fletcher, RN, DNP, GNP-BC, FAAN, Director of Senior Services, Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, and Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Virginia Health Systems

Kathleen Fletcher is the Director of Senior Services, Gerontological Nurse Practitioner, and Assistant Professor of Nursing at the University of Virginia Health Systems in Charlottesville, Virginia where she has worked since 1986. Kathy maintains a hands-on role focusing on developing geriatric knowledge, skills, and abilities of nurses. She oversees the work of three Geriatric Nurse Practitioners working in local nursing homes with over 500 UVA patients. She is course professor for an undergraduate nursing course in geriatrics and teaches and publishes extensively in gerontological nursing.

Kathy is the UVA Principal Investigator on the Virginia Geriatric Education Consortium HRSA grant (2010-2015). She is a consumer advocate and educator serving on the Governor appointed Virginia Board of Long Term Care Administrators. Her credits also include Past-President of the Pennsylvania State University Nursing Alumni Association, past President of the National Conference of Gerontological Nurse Practitioners and former Chair of the Board on Credentialing, Gerontological Nursing for the American Nurses Association. Kathy received the highest award given by the Virginia Nurses Association, the Nancy Vance Award for Clinical Excellence in 2001 and was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2002.

Belinda Parke, PhD RN, Past President of the Canadian Gerontological Nursing Association, Nurse Researcher in Elder-Friendly Initiatives, Assistant Professor at University of Alberta

Belinda Parke is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in older adult health and Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Nursing. She holds advanced nursing practice experience in gerontological nursing in acute care, education, and administration. She has published numerous articles, and has a particular interest in health care systems and transitions, dementia, and geriatric syndromes in acute care nursing. Belinda’s research focus is in the area of Elder Friendly Hospitals. She is currently involved in projects that focus on dementia care and the Emergency Department. In addition, Belinda has interests in qualitative methods informed by a social ecological perspective.
